Dinosaurs in Colorado
The dinosaurs of the world at one time called Colorado home. And if you don’t believe it then you have got to see it for yourself…FOR FREE!
There are over 10 free tours you can take in Colorado that bring you up close and personal with the creatures that once roamed the earth. Bring the kids too, they will love to see what is left behind.
Most people head right to the Colorado State Dinosaur Park. Here you get the chance to see bones found in the area and view scientists currently on digs looking for new artifacts. There is a nominal fee to get into the park and camping costs are additional.
But, if you are looking to see dinosaurs FREE, check out the following places:
Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum This little known facility is on the Trindad State Junior College Campus, and while it sounds small, don’t pass it up! This is one dinosaur friendly place not to be missed! Many of the articles on display were from digs sponsored by the college. This museum caters to the dinosaur lover at heart, so expect to see the dinosaur bones up close and personal. (Louden-Henritze Archaeology Museum, Trinidad, Colorado, 719.846.5508)
Dinosaur Ridge Frankly, the name says it all. This mountain edge, just on the outskirts of Denver, is a chance to walk where the dinosaurs once walked. Footprints are found on the 2 ½ mile tour to discover and photograph. The kids will love the chance to put their foot next to the markings making a great picture pose! The visitor’s center is a chance to learn more too. All the volunteers are dinosaur lovers so don’t try to stump them, because they have studied dinosaurs for their entire professional career. Swetsville Zoo Okay, maybe this is a stretch, but the kids will love the chance to see a dinosaur standing two and a half floors high, even if it is made of car parts. Making monsters, dinosaurs and creatures out of car and farm parts, creator Bill Swets aims to delight the eye. The Tyrannosaurs Rex, standing next to I-25 at the Fort Collins Harmony exit, is the perfect example why you would not want to be too close to a real dinosaur but why you would want to learn more!
